Cormac O'Brien

Cormac O'Brien is an Irish Research Council funded Doctoral Scholar in the School of English, Drama, and Film at University College Dublin, where he is completing his PhD, entitled 'Acting the Man: Performing Masculinities in Contemporary Irish Theatre.'  Supervised by Dr Emilie Pine, Cormac's thesis is a critical and theoretical intervention into several crucial shifts in performances of masculinity in Irish theatre from 1960 until the present. Cormac is a founding member of the ISTR gender and sexuality working group, and is also a founding member and webmaster for the International Federation of Theatre Research (IFTR) working group 'Queer Futures'. Cormac has published several peer-reviewed essays to date, interrogating performances of masculinity and sexuality in the work of playwrights such as Conor McPherson, Marina Carr, Caryl Churchill, Rosemary Jenkinson, John B. Keane, Tom Murphy, Frank McGuinness, Neil Watkins, Dermot Bolger, and Nancy Harris.  Cormac gratefully acknowledges the support of the Graduate Research Education Programme (GREP) in Gender, Culture, and Identity at UCD.

Research interests: Contemporary Irish and British theatre; Irish studies, gender and sexuality in performance; queer theatre and queer theory; critical theory and performance analysis;  the HIV positive body in performance.

As part of ISTR continuing development we would like to offer our current postgraduate members the opportunity to have their profiles published on this website. This will enhance their visibility in the field and going forward it will strengthen the relationship between the established members of ISTR and our vibrant graduate community.
